Technomad Makes Loudspeakers with Heat from the Sun

Sustainable process improves quality while significantly reducing costs and carbon footprint

BOSTON, April 3, 2020 – Technomad redefines sustainable audiovisual equipment with a partnership that brings solar technology to its already-green plastic loudspeaker manufacturing process.  The new manufacturing method reduces production costs by nearly 30 percent while reducing the company’s carbon footprint.

Technomad has long been associated with sustainable manufacturing, producing durable, weatherproof MilSpec loudspeakers using recycled plastic.  As a result, Technomad loudspeakers are often specified in AV projects with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) requirements.

In 2016, Technomad teamed up with LightManufacturing LLC, which developed a unique patent-pending method of molding plastic with solar heat.  The company’s unique Solar Rotational Molding (SRM™) systems eliminate greenhouse gasses associated with traditional rotational molding while reducing manufacturing costs — an unusual combination in a world that equates ‘green’ with unaffordable.

The partnership began by manufacturing three of Technomad’s loudspeakers using the solar methodology.  Now in 2020, all Technomad products are sustainably molded by LightManufacturing at its California facility.

“Technomad is the first company in the professional audio industry to take advantage of solar thermal energy,” said Rodger von Kries, vice president of Technomad.  “We’ve always worked on the cutting edge of green manufacturing, being the first company to use 100 percent recycled plastic to make loudspeaker cabinets.  The LightManufacturing partnership brings new advantages by reducing our costs while benefiting the environment.”

LightManufacturing’s SRM process uses heliostats – computer-controlled mirrors – to concentrate heat from the sun onto a mold and melt the plastic inside.  The sun’s thermal energy is used directly, avoiding the costs of making electricity with photovoltaic panels.  The process delivers higher quality parts at a lower cost than traditional rotational molding, with typical savings of 10 to 30 percent.  The nearly silent SRM systems use no natural gas or external AC power, and the hardware costs less than traditional rotational molding systems.

“This partnership shows that the solar molding process can deliver high-quality, reduced-cost parts for manufacturers right out of the gate,” said Mark Severy, a consultant at LightManufacturing.  “Technomad came to us with a 15-year history of making world-class products.  We met their requirements for outstanding quality, lower cost — and zero carbon emissions.”

ABOUT LIGHT MANUFACTURING

LightManufacturing LLC’s unique process re-invents rotational molding and other plastic molding processes through the use of heliostats and solar thermal energy.  The company works with equipment builders, plastic molders, large-scale end-users of plastic components, governments and NGOs to create sustainable and economically-competitive manufacturing solutions. ABOUT TECHNOMAD

Western North Carolina Nature Center Upgrades to Technomad

IMAGOS Entertainment in Miami writes,

“I hope all is well with you and the folks at Technomad!

I just wanted to share with you some pictures from a recent project involving Technomad loudspeakers and mounts.

These pictures are from the WNC Nature Center‘s new Grand Entrance and Festival Events Plaza. We installed three 70v Viennas and mounts with one of the speakers providing audio to the new entrance parking area and the other two units providing coverage the Plaza.  …the weatherproof Vienna’s provide excellent sound reinforcement for live events as well as regular and seasonal background music.  The client was very impressed with the quality of sound and it’s ability to withstand the elements (the Vienna that provides audio to the parking entrance is fully exposed and was constantly getting rained on while we were installing it!).

The last picture from this group is from a previous Technomad installation at the Zoo (you may remember it as the Otter Falls exhibit).

I call it “Technomad: Communing with Nature”. By the way, that system is still going strong and used everyday without issue.

If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call.

Thank you,

One sports complex, five sports PA systems from Technomad

“The sound has been really great!” – Kevin Bachinski, Athletic Director

Our Dealer Tri-Electronics Inc. of Hammond IN shared some notes about the installation of multiple Technomad PA systems at a nearby athletic field complex.

Alex Orsag, Engineering Services Manager, writes “Hanover Community School Corporation is just now completing the renovation of some of their athletic fields. We installed Vienna speakers on four press boxes: Baseball, Softball, Soccer, and Tennis. In the Fall of 2013 we installed Berlin speakers on the Football Field press box. There are various photos of each of these. They have been using the system at the baseball and softball fields since early May, and the Football Field since 2013.

I spoke to Kevin Bachinski, the Athletic Director for Hanover Community Schools. Kevin said, ‘Since the new sound system was installed at the
Football Field a couple of years ago, the sound has been really great. We’ve just begun to use the new systems at the Baseball and Softball Fields, and everything is working well. Everyone is happy with these sound systems.'”.

Great update from Alex and Tri-Electronics, and the first installation we know of where Technomad is providing audio for FIVE sports at the same location: Baseball, Softball, Soccer,  Tennis, and Football.

Scoreboard Sound System at Berry College | Scoreboard PA

Technomad Berry College Scoreboard - Scoreboard PA System and Scoreboard Audio System from Technomad upgrades ballfield stadium at Berry College.

Berry College of Mount Berry, Georgia recently upgraded the the William R. Bowdoin baseball stadium with a Technomad Scoreboard PA System.  The system features the weatherproof Technomad Berlin HQ loudspeakers, as well as a PowerChiton Waterproof Amplifier module.

“…exceptional Audio quality at any volume level and the coverage area is phenomenal”.

The school’s existing audio front end (signal sources and a multi-channel mixer) was patched to the remote Scoreboard PA System using RDL Twisted Pair signal transmission devices, which Technomad pre-integrated at the factory.   This analog technology delivers CD-quality audio over a single pair of Cat5/6 wiring.

Steve Hill of Berry College writes, “I first was introduced to the Technomad line of products several years ago at the Infocomm show in Orlando. After an informative conversation with the Technomad sales rep, I was excited to try a pair of NOHO enclosures at our soccer/Lacrosse field. Needless to say they performed as well as the Technomad rep had promised, so we decided to try another pair of NOHO’s at the football practice field and they too performed flawlessly. Our latest project was to replace our old baseball field sound system that was attached to the press box and relocate it to the scoreboard. We installed two Berlin’s and a PowerChiton amp, sending the audio signal via CAT6 cable. The system offers exceptional Audio quality at any volume level and the coverage area is phenomenal.  All of this coupled with great technical support from the team at Technomad is what makes Technomad my first choice for Audio”.
